For many families, water can offer a sense of calm during labor. The warmth, privacy, and freedom of movement provided by a birth pool can help create a more relaxed and supported birth experience.
At Haven Midwifery Collective, we believe families deserve clear information, meaningful choices, and respectful care. As we work toward opening our future New York City birth center, water immersion for labor and birth is part of the kind of supportive, midwifery-led care we hope to make available for eligible families.
What Is Water Birth?
Water immersion means spending part of labor in a tub or birth pool filled with warm water. Some people use water during labor and then leave the pool to give birth outside the water. Others remain in the pool and give birth in the water. This is called water birth.
Water can be used as one option for comfort during labor. It is never required, and choosing to use a birth pool does not mean a person must give birth in the water. Families can enter or leave the pool whenever needed or desired.
Why Do Families Choose Water?
Many birthing people choose water because it can feel soothing, private, and comforting. The warm water may help the body relax and can make it easier to change positions during labor. The buoyancy of the water can provide a feeling of lightness and support, especially as labor becomes more intense.
Families may choose water immersion because it can support:
More freedom to move and find comfortable positions
A calm, quiet environment during labor
Relaxation and a greater sense of control
Nonmedication options for coping with labor sensations
Connection with a partner, doula, or other chosen support people
A birth experience that feels personal and centered on the family
Research suggests that, for healthy people with uncomplicated pregnancies, using water during the first stage of labor may reduce the use of epidural pain relief. Many people also report greater comfort, relaxation, and satisfaction with their birth experience.
Is Water Birth Safe?
Safety is the foundation of all care at Haven Midwifery. Water immersion and water birth are options for people with healthy, low risk pregnancies when eligibility criteria are met and a trained midwife is present.
Not every pregnancy or labor is appropriate for laboring or giving birth in water. Your midwife will review your health history, pregnancy, labor progress, and baby’s wellbeing to help determine whether water remains a safe option.
If there is any concern about the health of the birthing person or baby, the midwife may recommend leaving the pool for closer assessment or a change in care. This is a normal part of safe, responsive maternity care.
Water Birth Is About Choice
Planning to use a birth pool does not mean that everything must happen in one specific way. Labor is unpredictable, and plans may change. You may decide that the water feels wonderful and stay in the pool for birth. You may use the pool for a short time and then prefer another comfort measure. You may also need to leave the water because of a clinical concern.
Every path is valid. A positive birth experience is not defined by whether a baby is born in water. It is defined by feeling informed, respected, supported, and cared for throughout the process.
How Will Haven Support Water Birth?
Haven Midwifery Collective is working to create a birth center that supports physiologic birth while maintaining clear safety practices. Our future approach to water immersion and water birth will include careful client eligibility, trained midwives, individualized assessment, and clear procedures for cleaning, infection prevention, monitoring, and responding to urgent concerns.
We envision a space where families can labor with comfort and privacy, surrounded by people they trust. Water birth may be one of the many options available to support that experience.
Our midwives will talk with each family about their goals, questions, and preferences during prenatal care. Together, we will help create a plan that supports comfort, safety, and informed decision making.
A Haven for Families
At Haven, we honor birth as a healthy, powerful, and deeply personal experience. We are committed to creating a community centered birth center where families can explore options such as water immersion with trustworthy information and compassionate guidance.

Water Birth Frequently Asked Questions
What is water birth?
Water birth means that a baby is born while the birthing person is in a warm birth pool. Some families use the pool during labor for comfort and then leave the water before birth. Others choose to remain in the pool for the birth.
Using water during labor and giving birth in water are two different choices. Your preferences can change at any point.
Why do people choose water birth?
Many people find warm water calming and comforting during labor. The water can support relaxation, privacy, movement, and finding positions that feel more comfortable.
Water immersion is one nonmedication option for coping with labor sensations. Some people feel that the buoyancy of the water helps them feel lighter and more supported as labor progresses.
Can I use the birth pool during labor without giving birth in water?
Yes. You may use the birth pool for part of labor and decide to give birth outside the pool. You can also enter and leave the pool as your comfort and care needs change.
There is no expectation that you must remain in the water once you enter it. Your comfort, preferences, and clinical needs will guide the plan.
Who may be eligible for water birth?
Water birth is generally considered for people with healthy, uncomplicated pregnancies who remain at low risk during labor. Eligibility is based on an individual assessment of your health history, pregnancy, labor progress, and your baby’s well-being.
Haven Midwifery’s future water birth policies and eligibility guidelines will be shared as the birth center develops.
Is water birth safe?
Safety is the foundation of water birth care. For families who remain eligible, water immersion and water birth are supported by trained midwives using established safety practices.
Water birth requires careful client selection, ongoing assessment, clean equipment, infection prevention practices, and clear procedures for responding to urgent concerns. If your midwife identifies a reason to leave the pool, they will explain what is happening and support you through the next steps.
What happens if I need to leave the pool?
You may choose to leave the pool at any time. Your midwife may also recommend leaving the pool if you or your baby need closer assessment, a change in monitoring, medication, or other care that cannot be safely provided in the water.
Leaving the pool does not mean anything has gone wrong. It is one way your care team responds to your needs and helps keep birth as safe as possible.
Will I have pain relief options during a water birth?
A birth center does not provide epidural anesthesia. Warm water may be one comfort option during labor, along with movement, position changes, breathing, rest, nourishment as appropriate, massage, warmth, and continuous support from your midwife and chosen support people.
Your midwife will discuss comfort options with you during prenatal care so you can decide what feels right for you.
Can I have a water birth if this is my first baby?
Having your first baby does not automatically mean that water birth is not an option. Your eligibility will be based on your individual health, pregnancy, and labor.
Every labor is different. Some people who plan a water birth may decide to give birth outside the pool, while others may need to leave the water because their care needs change. Your experience will be supported regardless of where your baby is born.
Can my partner, doula, or family be with me during water birth?
Haven Midwifery believes that birth is supported by connection, trust, and loving care. Your chosen support people can be an important part of your experience.
Visitor guidance and support person policies will be shared as Haven’s birth center plans are finalized.
What happens immediately after a water birth?
After a water birth, the baby is gently brought to the surface and placed on the birthing person’s chest whenever possible. Midwives will assess the baby’s transition to life outside the womb while supporting early bonding, skin to skin contact, and feeding.
The birthing person and baby will continue to receive attentive care in the hours after birth.
